How much does it cost to ship a car to or from Washington?

No single figure answers what a car costs to or from Washington, because the price follows the mileage to the far end of the trip. The route table gives the band for each route.

We don't price a state, because a price needs two endpoints and a state only has one. Washington's geography makes that unusually visible: a car coming up from Los Angeles and a car coming out of Chicago arrive at the same Seattle driveway having covered very different distances, and they belong in different bands with different reference ranges. This is a reference price range for this distance band, not a quote for your shipment. Your actual rate varies depending on: vehicle details, the specific pickup location, the delivery location, the timing of pickup and delivery, any additional services, driver availability, and other market conditions. How long do I have to register a car after moving to Washington?

New residents have 30 days after moving to Washington to get a Washington driver licence and register their vehicles, under the Washington State Department of Licensing's moving rule.

Washington puts a condition on that clock that most states do not: the Department of Licensing will not register a vehicle until the owner holds a Washington driver licence, and the two things are done at different offices. Driver licensing offices issue the licence. Vehicle licensing offices issue the plates. So a car delivered on a Friday cannot simply be taken to one counter and finished. Anyone shipping a vehicle ahead of themselves should plan the licence appointment first, because the licence comes before the registration and the same 30-day clock covers both.

Does Washington require an inspection before I can register a shipped-in car?

No, Washington requires no emissions test on any vehicle: the Washington State Department of Ecology ended the state's emission check programme on January 1, 2020, and nothing replaced it.

That sets Washington apart from the states most cars are shipped in from. A car arriving from California, Nevada or Arizona comes from a system where an emissions certificate is required for registration. Washington has no such step, and no periodic safety inspection either. The only inspection Washington can require is a vehicle identification inspection, and that is conditional, so the next section covers it. For a car shipped into Seattle or Spokane, that keeps the registration timeline short and predictable. The driver-licence requirement is what delays it, not a test lane.

Does Washington require a VIN inspection on an out-of-state car?

Only when a Washington Department of Licensing agent issues an Inspection Request form does the Washington State Patrol inspect a vehicle, so a VIN inspection in Washington is conditional rather than routine.

The Washington State Patrol names the situations: vehicles rebuilt after being destroyed or declared a total loss, vehicles reported stolen, homemade vehicles, vehicles without a proper VIN, a discrepancy between the VIN and the record, a disputed record, and cases where ownership is in doubt. An ordinary used car arriving on a carrier with a clean out-of-state title normally sees none of it. The order matters if it is required: the licensing agent decides at the title counter and issues the form, and only then can an appointment be booked. The State Patrol's calendars run two weeks out, so it is not a same-day fix.

Why does registering a car cost more in Seattle than elsewhere in Washington?

A Regional Transit Authority motor vehicle excise tax of 1.1 percent applies to owners inside the Sound Transit District in King, Pierce and Snohomish counties, on top of ordinary registration fees.

The tax is the single biggest cost surprise for a car shipped into the Puget Sound area, and it turns on the address, not the county line, because the district covers part of each of the three counties, not all of them. The Department of Licensing calculates it from the vehicle's depreciated value, which comes off the manufacturer's suggested retail price and a depreciation schedule set in state law, so a newer or more expensive car pays more. A vehicle registered at an address outside the district pays none of it. Anyone shipping an expensive car to Seattle and choosing between two possible registration addresses should check the district before deciding.

Which Washington routes do we cover?

Wave Auto Transport publishes a reference range for one Washington route, California to Washington, and Washington is a destination only in that set.

Washington is a destination in our published routes and never an origin. That reflects which route pages exist, not which way carriers run: vehicles leave Washington every day. It also fits the route itself. The north-south run up the West Coast carries a heavy load of people relocating into the Puget Sound area, and the southbound leg is thinner, so a carrier heading north is usually running a booked trailer and a carrier heading south is often looking for freight. Each route in the table links to its own page, with that route's distance, reference price range and transit time.

What route does the truck take on the California-to-Washington run?

The California-to-Washington run is a single-highway trip: 1,115 of its 1,135 road miles are on I-5, through Sacramento and Redding.

The California-to-Washington route is one corridor from end to end. That makes it simpler to plan than a multi-leg run and also more exposed: when the corridor has a problem, there is no parallel route of the same capacity to move to. The northern half of the drive climbs over the Siskiyous and through southern Oregon, which is where a winter storm on this run usually bites, and Redding is the last large service point before it. We measure the route between Los Angeles and Seattle. A pickup in San Francisco or Sacramento joins the same corridor further north and covers fewer miles.

What time of year affects a car shipment to or from Washington?

Washington closes three mountain highways every winter, and the longest, the North Cascades Highway on State Route 20, was open only from April 22 to December 4 in 2025.

Those dates come from the Washington State Department of Transportation's own closure record. Chinook Pass on State Route 410 and Cayuse Pass on State Route 123 close on the same seasonal pattern. The closures change a Washington delivery: a car going to Winthrop, Twisp or anywhere in the Methow Valley in January is reached from a different direction than the same car in July, and the detour is long. The department's record runs back to 1972 and shows opening dates from early March to mid-May and closing dates from late October to mid-December, so the window moves with the snow, not with a calendar. Separately, Washington law keeps studded tires legal from November 1 to April 1 under Revised Code of Washington section 47.36.250, which is the state's own definition of its winter driving season. We can't name a busiest or cheapest month for Washington because we have no Washington shipment-volume record to base one on.

Does Wave Auto Transport ship cars to Washington?

Yes. We arrange car shipping into and out of Washington as a broker, and every move goes to a vetted, licensed, insured carrier in our network.

We have no office, terminal or yard in Washington, and nobody on the ground there. What Wave arranges is the booking, the carrier match and the dispatch. Door-to-door means the driver gets as close to your address as a full-size carrier can legally and safely get. Seattle's older residential streets (Queen Anne, Capitol Hill, the steeper blocks of West Seattle) are frequently too narrow or too steep for a seventy-five-foot rig, and in those cases the driver arranges a meeting point on a flatter arterial nearby rather than attempting the hill.

Where Washington's shipping volume sits

The Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue metropolitan statistical area holds 4,145,494 people and ranks 15 among the country's metro areas, and it is where Washington's route distance is measured from.

Seattle is the anchor city we measure from. We arrange shipping from anywhere in Washington, not only from there. The state's volume is heavily concentrated on the Puget Sound side of the Cascades, and the Sound Transit District's boundary cuts through exactly that area. That is why the registration-cost section above matters more in Washington than it would in a state whose population is spread evenly. A delivery to Spokane, on the eastern side, sits outside the district, outside the pass-closure problem, and a long way further from the published route line.

Washington car shipping FAQs

How long do I have to register a car after moving to Washington?
New residents have 30 days after moving to Washington to get a Washington driver licence and register their vehicles, per the Washington State Department of Licensing. The licence comes first, because the Department will not register a vehicle to someone who does not yet hold one, and the two are done at separate offices.
Does Washington require an emissions test on a car shipped in from another state?
No. Washington requires no emissions test on any vehicle. The Washington State Department of Ecology ended the state's emission check programme on January 1, 2020, and nothing replaced it, so a car arriving from a state where an emissions certificate gates registration has no equivalent step to clear in Washington.
Will my car need a VIN inspection when it arrives in Washington?
Usually no. A Washington State Patrol inspection happens only when a Department of Licensing agent issues an Inspection Request form, which they do for rebuilt, stolen, homemade or no-proper-VIN vehicles, VIN discrepancies, disputed records and doubtful ownership. An ordinary used car with a clean out-of-state title normally does not trigger one, and if it does, State Patrol appointment calendars run about two weeks out.
Why is my Washington registration bill higher in Seattle?
Because of the Regional Transit Authority tax. Owners at addresses inside the Sound Transit District in King, Pierce and Snohomish counties pay a 1.1 percent motor vehicle excise tax on top of ordinary fees, calculated from the vehicle's depreciated value. The district covers part of each county rather than all of it, so the address decides it, not the county.
Does winter affect a car delivery in Washington?
Yes, if the delivery is east of the Cascades on a seasonal highway. The Washington State Department of Transportation closes the North Cascades Highway on State Route 20 every winter (it was open only from April 22 to December 4 in 2025), along with Chinook Pass on State Route 410 and Cayuse Pass on State Route 123. A January delivery to the Methow Valley is reached the long way around.
Can a car carrier reach my street in Seattle?
Often not directly. A full-size carrier runs about seventy-five feet, and Seattle's older hill neighbourhoods (Queen Anne, Capitol Hill, the steeper blocks of West Seattle) have streets that are too narrow, too steep or too tightly parked for one. The driver calls ahead and arranges a handover on a flatter arterial nearby, which is normal practice and is what door-to-door means on a street like that.
Does Wave Auto Transport have an office in Washington?
No. Wave Auto Transport is a licensed property broker with no office, terminal or yard in Washington and nobody on the ground there. It arranges the booking and dispatches each move to a vetted, licensed and insured carrier in its network, and the carrier's driver runs the route.
