What is college student car shipping and who is it for?
College student car shipping covers a student's own car moving to or from campus, and the car ships by the same methods as any personal vehicle.
The car ships the same way any personal vehicle does: open by default, with enclosed available for a higher-value car. We arrange the move as a broker, dispatching it to a vetted, licensed and insured carrier in our network rather than operating a truck ourselves. The booking differs in timing, delivery address and who arranges it. Move-in and move-out dates cluster into a few weeks a year instead of spreading evenly across the calendar. A dorm or a tight campus street is often a place a 75-foot carrier can't physically enter. And a parent or another family member often books and pays even though the student owns the car.
A student shipping their own car to or from campus, or a parent or family member booking that move on the student's behalf. Schools, housing offices and employers relocating staff are covered under when this isn't the right choice below.

What does college student car shipping cost, and is there a student discount?
A student's car is priced like any shipment, by distance, vehicle type and open or enclosed service, and we don't publish a student discount.
See open car shipping and, for the higher-cost option, enclosed car shipping for the reference ranges by distance. The only quantified discount on our site is 10% for military personnel. There is nothing for college students yet. Your actual rate is set when you request a quote.
How does college student car shipping work, step by step?
Booking a student's car follows our standard process, with one addition: agreeing on a meeting point near campus when the dorm or the street itself is too tight for a full-size carrier.

College student car shipping vs a standard one-time shipment
College student car shipping uses the same open-carrier service and reference ranges as any shipment; the differences are semester-driven booking timing, a delivery address that may need a nearby meeting point instead of a literal dorm drop-off, and who typically books and pays.
| Factor | College student move | Standard one-time shipment |
|---|---|---|
| Booking timing | Concentrated into a few weeks around fall move-in, spring move-out and, to a lesser extent, winter break. Booking ahead of those windows leaves us more route options to work with. | Set by the customer's own schedule, with no recurring seasonal squeeze to plan around. |
| Delivery address | Often a dorm or a tight campus street a 75-foot carrier can't enter, so the carrier and the receiving party typically agree on a nearby meeting point instead. | Usually a home address a carrier can reach directly. |
| Who books and pays | Frequently a parent or family member, even though the student owns the car and needs to be present at pickup and delivery. | Typically the vehicle's owner, booking and paying for their own shipment. |
| Discount | None published. We don't offer a student discount. | None either, unless the shipper qualifies for the unrelated 10% military discount or an unspecified return-customer discount. |
| Familiarity with the process | Frequently a first-time shipper who's never seen a bill of lading or a car-carrier pickup before. | May be a repeat shipper already familiar with the pickup and delivery process. |
When college student car shipping is NOT the right choice
College student car shipping isn't the right fit for a permanent household relocation with no semester timing behind it, or for a school or housing office arranging vehicles institutionally rather than for one student's own car.
The extra handling here is timing and delivery-address handling for a semester calendar and a campus address. A family moving for good, with no recurring school-term pattern, gets nothing extra from it, and a plain shipment through open car shipping is the more direct path. We also don't offer any institutional or bulk booking arrangement for a school, a housing office or a student-move logistics company. A student's car is booked the same way any individual shipment is booked.
What we do and don't do for a college student's car
We arrange transport for a student's car as a broker, the same as for any customer, and we don't publish a student discount or guarantee door-to-dorm delivery.
College student car shipping FAQs
- Does Wave Auto Transport ship cars for college students?
Yes. We arrange transport for a student's own car the same way we do for any personal vehicle, as a broker.
- Is there a discount for college students?
No. We don't publish a student discount. The only quantified discount on our site is a 10% reduction for military personnel, which is unrelated and doesn't apply to a student without qualifying military status.
- Can a carrier deliver directly to my dorm?
Often not. Many dorms sit on streets a 75-foot car carrier can't physically enter, so the driver and whoever's receiving the car typically agree on a nearby meeting point instead, such as a large parking lot or shopping center close to campus.
- When should I book a car shipment for the start or end of the semester?
Book ahead of move-in and move-out weeks, since that's when a school's home region carries the heaviest demand for the same corridor and a wider pickup window gives us more ways to fit your car onto a route. At quote time you can choose an expedited, regular or flexible pickup window.
- Can my parent book the shipment for me?
Yes. Anyone can submit the quote form on a student's behalf, but the student, or another authorized representative, still needs to be present at both pickup and delivery to walk the car with the driver and sign the bill of lading.
- What if the student is in class when the car is delivered?
Another adult the student authorizes can receive the car in the student's place. That person walks around the car with the driver, notes any new damage and signs the bill of lading. The page on whether you need to be there for car shipping pickup covers who qualifies.
- What is a bill of lading and why does it matter for a first-time shipper?
A bill of lading is the condition report the driver and the car's owner or representative sign together at pickup and again at delivery, noting any existing damage before the car is loaded. For a student shipping a car for the first time, it's the document a damage claim would be built from afterward, so checking it carefully at both ends matters.
- Can I ship a car that doesn't run to or from campus?
Yes. We transport damaged and non-running vehicles using specialized loading equipment. There may be additional fees for loading or unloading a car that can't be driven onto the carrier under its own power.
- Is enclosed transport available for a student's car?
Yes. Enclosed is available for a student's car the same as for any booking, usually chosen for a higher-value car. See enclosed car shipping for what it adds and costs.
