How much does it cost to ship a car to or from New York?

A New York car shipment is priced by the distance to the other endpoint, and New York's four published routes span three distance bands, from a Florida pair to a longer Arizona lane to the longest route in our published set, California.

We don't price a state, because a price needs two endpoints and a state only has one. This is a reference price range for this distance band, not a quote for your shipment. Your actual rate varies depending on: vehicle details, the specific pickup location, the delivery location, the timing of pickup and delivery, any additional services, driver availability, and other market conditions. Inside New York itself, your pickup address moves the number in a way no state figure could.

Who handles registration paperwork for a car shipped to New York?

Registering your car, getting it inspected, or getting a VIN check done in New York is up to you. We don't handle any of it.

We arrange the carrier and the move. What a new New York resident does with the vehicle once it's off the truck - including anything New York's own registration and insurance rules require - is yours to handle. We don't walk you through New York's rules and we don't file anything on your behalf.

Which New York routes do we cover?

We publish reference ranges for four New York routes, and one of them, New York to California, is the longest route in the whole published set.

The four are New York to Florida, Florida to New York, New York to Arizona and New York to California. The Florida connection runs both directions, while Arizona and California run outbound only so far. New York to Arizona is one of our own named volume corridors. Each route in the table links to its own page, with that route's distance, reference price range and transit time.

What route does the truck take on the New York-to-California run?

The New York-to-California run puts 1,473 of its 2,794 road miles on I-80, with Denver the only large metro we name along the way.

More than half of that trip is one highway, and the rest is a chain of shorter segments (I-76, I-70, I-15, I-90, I-280 and a final stretch on I-10) stitched across the Rockies and the Great Basin. New York's other published route is a very different trip: New York to Florida spends 898 of its 1,279 road miles on I-95 through Savannah and Jacksonville, a densely served corridor where a carrier is easy to find most weeks. Cross the country and there's a lot of ground with no second trailer to swap onto if something goes wrong. That is why a coast-to-coast booking wants a wider pickup window than a seaboard one.

What time of year affects a car shipment to or from New York?

New York allows studded tires only from October 16 through April 30, according to the New York Department of Motor Vehicles, and that window is the state's own definition of its winter driving season.

That window opens in October, earlier than Washington's, which runs November 1 to April 1, Ohio's, November 1 through April 15, or California's, November 1 through April 30. The October start is a fair proxy for when snow first closes roads in the western and northern counties. That matters more for an upstate delivery than a New York City one: a car going to Buffalo, Watertown or the Adirondacks in November is a different scheduling problem from the same car going to Queens. We can't name a busiest or cheapest month for New York because we have no New York shipment-volume record to base one on.

Does Wave Auto Transport ship cars to New York?

Yes. We arrange car shipping into and out of New York as a broker, and every move goes to a vetted, licensed, insured carrier in our network.

We have no office, terminal or yard in New York, and nobody on the ground there. What we arrange is the booking, the carrier match and the dispatch. Door-to-door means the driver gets as close to your address as a full-size carrier can legally and safely get. New York City is the hardest place in the country to keep that promise. A seventy-five-foot rig can't work most of Manhattan at all: the streets are too narrow, there's nowhere legal to stop for the twenty minutes an unload takes, and alternate-side parking rules mean the kerb you were promised is often occupied. Brooklyn's brownstone blocks in Park Slope, Cobble Hill and Bedford-Stuyvesant have the same problem with added tree cover; Staten Island and outer Queens are usually easier. In practice a New York City handover happens on a wide avenue, in a commercial lot, or across the river in New Jersey. That's the normal outcome there, not a failed booking. Upstate is a different story: a delivery in Rochester, Syracuse or Albany usually reaches the driveway.

Where does New York sit in Wave's own shipping network?

New York to Arizona is one of our four highest-volume corridors, and all of New York is a snowbird origin into Florida.

These are two separate patterns. The NY-to-Arizona corridor shows up as our New York-to-Arizona route. The snowbird pattern is the whole Northeast, including New York, moving into Florida for the winter, so New York's snowbird role has no qualifier, unlike northern Illinois. The New York-to-Florida and Florida-to-New York routes carry that flow.

What car-auction infrastructure sits in New York?

New York has IAA Long Island in Medford, one of the auction locations we regularly pick up from and deliver to, and its public salvage-auction access rules are stricter than most states'.

We have no agreement with IAA. We pick up from and deliver to auctions like it regularly and work around the auction's own schedule. Public salvage-buyer access rules vary by state, and New York is among the strictest, which matters more to a salvage buyer than to an ordinary shipment.

Where New York's shipping volume sits

The New York-Newark-Jersey City metropolitan statistical area holds 19,940,274 people and ranks 1 among the country's metro areas, and it's where New York's route distances are measured from.

New York City is the anchor city we measure from. We arrange shipping from anywhere in New York, not only from there. The metro it anchors is the largest in the United States and it crosses a state line, taking in Newark and Jersey City. That is why our New Jersey page has no metro population of its own. New York State itself holds only one of the country's fifty largest metro areas, so the anchor covers a smaller share of the state's geography than it looks: Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Albany are all a long way off the published route line. The intermediate metros we name on New York routes, Savannah, Jacksonville and Denver, are all outside New York, because both published corridors leave the state early and stay gone.

From October 16 through April 30, according to the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Brownstone blocks in Park Slope, Cobble Hill and Bedford-Stuyvesant have the same problem. The handover happens on a wide avenue, in a commercial lot, or across the river in New Jersey.
