New Jersey Car Shipping
We arrange car shipping to and from New Jersey as a licensed property broker. A new New Jersey resident has 60 days to transfer an out-of-state title and registration, and the Motor Vehicle Commission handles it by appointment only.

How much does it cost to ship a car to or from New Jersey?
A New Jersey car shipment is priced by how far the other endpoint is, not by the state itself. The route table shows the distance band for each published route.
We don't price a state, because a price needs two endpoints and a state only has one. This is a reference price range for this distance band, not a quote for your shipment. Your actual rate varies depending on: vehicle details, the specific pickup location, the delivery location, the timing of pickup and delivery, any additional services, driver availability, and other market conditions. The live price for a specific car on a specific date comes from the quote form. New Jersey is small enough that the pickup town rarely moves a car between bands the way it can in California or Texas. What moves the number is the other end of the trip.
How long do I have to register a car after moving to New Jersey?
New residents have 60 days to transfer an out-of-state vehicle title and registration to New Jersey, under the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission's moving rule.
That deadline is longer than most states allow, but the Commission adds a second condition: the transfer is due within 60 days of the move or before the existing out-of-state licence and registration expire, whichever comes first. A car shipped in during the last month of its old registration has far less time than the headline number suggests. The Commission extends the window to 120 days during a declared Public Health Emergency. Title and registration work is by appointment, and the Commission's own instruction is no walk-ins, on a Vehicle Registration Application, Form BA-49. Book the appointment before the carrier arrives.

Does New Jersey require an inspection before I can register a shipped-in car?
Yes, New Jersey inspects vehicles once every two years, and the test the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission performs is an On Board Diagnostic and Emission Component Check.
New vehicles run on a five-year interval instead of the two-year one. A long exemption list follows, written in model years and weight: gasoline passenger vehicles of model year 1995 and older at a gross vehicle weight rating of 8,500 pounds or less are exempt, as are 2007-and-older gasoline passenger vehicles rated between 8,501 and 14,000 pounds, and 2013-and-older ones rated above 14,001 pounds. Electric vehicles, motorcycles and historic vehicles are exempt too. The Commission notes that exemption from the test does not exempt the owner from maintaining the equipment, and a vehicle can still be cited for missing or malfunctioning emissions gear.

Does New Jersey require a VIN inspection on an out-of-state car?
Only where the vehicle was last registered in a state that does not issue titles does New Jersey require VIN verification, so it is conditional rather than routine.
In that case the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission wants a pencil tracing or a photograph of the VIN plate together with a notarised statement from the seller. Almost every car shipped into New Jersey arrives with an ordinary out-of-state title and needs none of it. One thing matters for shipping, though: a pencil tracing has to be taken off the vehicle itself, so if it applies it cannot be done before the car is delivered. A photograph taken by a seller two thousand miles away is not the same document.

What happens if I bought the car outside New Jersey?
A vehicle purchased or leased outside New Jersey has 14 days to reach a State-operated inspection station, on a Green Card, Form SS-19, issued with the registration packet.
The Green Card goes in the lower left corner of the windshield and is the temporary authority to drive the vehicle while that clock runs. A new vehicle that passes receives a one-time five-year New Car Dealer Inspection Decal. This is the shortest deadline here by a wide margin, and it is the one that most often collides with shipping: a car bought at an out-of-state auction and put straight on a carrier can use up a week of a fourteen-day window in transit. Book the inspection slot against the delivery date, not the registration date.

Which New Jersey routes do we cover?
Wave Auto Transport publishes a reference range for one New Jersey route, New Jersey to Florida, and New Jersey is an origin only in that set.
New Jersey is one of two states in our route set that appears as an origin and never as a destination. That describes which route pages exist, not which way carriers drive: the New Jersey to Florida corridor is one of the most heavily worked north-south runs in the country, and it moves in both directions. For the reverse Florida-to-New-Jersey direction, use the quote form. Each route in the table links to its own page, with that route's distance, reference price range and transit time.
What route does the truck take on the New Jersey-to-Florida run?
The New Jersey-to-Florida run is a coastal trunk route: 912 of its 1,270 road miles are on I-95, through Savannah and Jacksonville.
That share is the highest of any Wave route into Florida, and it is what makes the New Jersey-to-Florida run predictable. A carrier joins the seaboard corridor almost immediately out of Newark and stays on it, with a short section on I-295 around Jacksonville. There is no mountain leg and no inland detour. Carriers are easy to find on this corridor in most weeks, because it is the same road every other north-south hauler is already running. It also means that when the corridor is congested or closed, everything on it is affected at once.
What time of year affects a car shipment to or from New Jersey?
New Jersey shuts tractor-trailers out of its interstate highways during declared winter storms, and the Department of Transportation issued such orders twice in early 2026: on January 25 and on February 22.
The restriction is broader than trucks: the January order covered all tractor-trailers, empty straight CDL-weighted trucks, passenger vehicles pulling trailers, recreational vehicles and motorcycles, in both directions, on a named list of highways. A car carrier is a tractor-trailer, so when one of these orders is in force a New Jersey pickup or delivery does not happen, whatever the booking says. Orders are issued with a few hours' notice against a storm forecast and lifted when the roads clear, which is why a January or February pickup window in New Jersey should be treated as wider than the same window in April. We can't name a busiest or cheapest month for New Jersey because we have no New Jersey shipment-volume record to base one on.

Why does this page publish no New Jersey metro population?
Newark has no metropolitan statistical area of its own, because the Census Bureau counts it inside the New York-Newark-Jersey City MSA together with New York City.
So any Newark metro population would really be New York's, and we won't publish a number about New Jersey that is really about another state. Newark's port, airport and rail yards are the eastern seaboard's vehicle gateway, and they work as part of a single metropolitan system that straddles the Hudson. That is why a carrier quoting a Newark pickup is quoting into New York metropolitan traffic, and why a Friday afternoon collection there behaves differently from a Friday afternoon collection anywhere else on our route list.
Does Wave Auto Transport ship cars to New Jersey?
Yes. We arrange car shipping into and out of New Jersey as a broker, and every move goes to a vetted, licensed, insured carrier in our network.
We have no office, terminal or yard in New Jersey, and nobody on the ground there. What Wave arranges is the booking, the carrier match and the dispatch. Door-to-door means the driver gets as close to your address as a full-size carrier can legally and safely get. In Hoboken, Jersey City and the older Newark and Bayonne street grids, a seventy-five-foot rig frequently cannot get in at all. In those cases the driver arranges a handover on a wider road or a lot nearby, which is the normal outcome on that kind of street, not a failed booking.
New Jersey car shipping FAQs
- How long do I have to register a car after moving to New Jersey?
- New residents have 60 days to transfer an out-of-state title and registration, per the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission, or until the existing out-of-state licence and registration expire, whichever comes first. The window extends to 120 days during a declared Public Health Emergency.
- Can I walk into a New Jersey MVC agency to register a shipped-in car?
- No. The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission handles title and registration by appointment, and its own instruction is no walk-ins. The transaction runs on a Vehicle Registration Application, Form BA-49, with the original out-of-state title properly assigned. Book the appointment against the delivery date rather than waiting for the carrier to arrive.
- Does New Jersey inspect a car shipped in from another state?
- Yes, on the ordinary two-year cycle. The test the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission performs is an On Board Diagnostic and Emission Component Check; new vehicles run on a five-year interval instead. Older gasoline passenger vehicles are exempt by model year and weight (1995 and older at 8,500 pounds gross vehicle weight rating or less, with two further tiers above that).
- Does New Jersey require a VIN inspection on an out-of-state car?
- Only where the vehicle was last registered in a state that does not issue titles. In that case the Commission wants a pencil tracing or photograph of the VIN plate plus a notarised statement from the seller. A pencil tracing has to be taken off the car itself, so if it applies it cannot be done before delivery.
- I bought the car out of state - how long before it has to be inspected in New Jersey?
- 14 days. A vehicle purchased or leased outside New Jersey is registered with a Green Card, Form SS-19, that goes in the lower left corner of the windshield and is valid for that period, and the car has to reach a State-operated inspection station inside it. Transit time eats into that window, so book the slot against the delivery date.
- Can winter weather stop a car pickup in New Jersey?
- Yes. The New Jersey Department of Transportation bans tractor-trailers from named interstate highways during declared winter storms, and it issued such orders on January 25 and February 22 in 2026. A car carrier is a tractor-trailer, so an order in force stops a New Jersey collection outright. Treat a January or February pickup window as wider than an April one.
- Why does this page not give a New Jersey metro population?
- Because Newark has no metropolitan statistical area of its own. The Census Bureau counts it inside the New York-Newark-Jersey City MSA with New York City. Any Newark metro figure would in fact be New York's, and we won't publish a number about New Jersey that is really about another state.
